Stampa, August 19, 2026 – The coming year will once again offer an opportunity to honor one of the great figures in the Giacometti family of artists: Augusto Giacometti was born on August 16, 1877. To mark the 150th anniversary of his birth, the Centro Giacometti will present an exhibition on his life and work in the former shooting house in Stampa.
From the shooting house, looking west, visitors can see Giacometti’s birthplace and the landscape in which he created numerous paintings. Also visible is one of his special places of longing: the Church of San Pietro on the hill of La Mota near Coltura.
Since the publication of the biography Augusto Giacometti – In einem förmlichen Farbentaumel in 2022, a number of interesting new documents have come to light. They shed new light on previously unknown aspects of the artist’s life and personality. The Centro Giacometti will explore these discoveries in its exhibition, with a particular focus on revealing Augusto’s human side.
One special work featured in the exhibition will be a 70 × 70 cm quilt created by Giannina McNair Scott-Torriani, granddaughter of the architect, postmaster, and freight hauler Andrea Torriani (1855–1918) of Maloja. Today, Giannina donated her intricate piece of needlework to the Centro Giacometti. She was inspired by Augusto’s Color Wheel of 1907.
Improvements are also planned at the entrance to the shooting house: an automated swing door is to be installed to facilitate visitor flow. The Centro Giacometti thanks the Municipality of Bregaglia for making the shooting house and the old shepherd’s house available for another five years. We will continue our efforts to ensure that the important cultural heritage of the Giacometti family’s home valley is appropriately preserved and brought to the attention of the public.
Anyone interested in supporting the realization of the exhibition is warmly invited to contact the Centro Giacometti.
