Giacometti Art Walk®: A New Life for the Video Guide

Few people realize that the Bregaglia Valley is one of the key places in the history of modern art. The story of the twentieth century resonates here, and the legacy of the Giacometti family remains very much alive. Walking through the valley, visitors encounter the artists’ origins, the landscapes and people that inspired them, and the lives of figures such as Giovanni, Augusto, Alberto, and Diego Giacometti, as well as Giovanni Segantini, Cuno Amiet, and Mario Negri.

In 2016, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Alberto Giacometti’s death, the Giacometti Center Foundation launched Giacometti Art Walk®, an innovative app created by Diego Mometti and Andrea Fenoglio. The video guide offered new perspectives on the lives and works of these artists in the places where they lived and worked, telling 150 years of local history through artworks, personal testimonies, and anecdotes. Based on GPS technology and designed to function without an internet connection, it featured thematic routes stretching from Sils to Chiavenna.

As a pioneering project in location-based docufiction, Giacometti Art Walk® sought to promote the region’s cultural heritage while enhancing its tourism offerings. Over time, however, the management of the app proved complex, and the smartphone-based user experience did not fully meet expectations.

For this reason, the 22 films are now being presented as a video installation at the Giacometti Center. Since June 6, 2026, they have once again been accessible to the public at the Center during regular opening hours, in both Italian and German.
In this new format, Giacometti Art Walk® has been given a second life, while paying tribute to all those who contributed to making the original project possible.
